Art Analysis: Allee dans le Parc
Allee dans le Parc
(Ally in the Park)
The piece I chose is an oil painting on canvas. The artist's name is Alice Pike Barney and she created this artwork in 1906, but the location is unknown. This painting was gifted to the Smithsonian American Art Museum by Laura Dreyfus Barney and Natalie Clifford Barney in memory of their mother, Alice Pike Barney. There was no other background on this painting.
The elements I chose to discuss regarding this piece are color, tone, and line. Alice used dark, warm, and cool colors. The darkness and the coolness portions of the painting evokes a bit of an eerie feeling. The warmness used helps balance the painting and invites some coziness back into the painting. The tone in the painting creates a sense of depth and distance. This helps with definition of the trees and leaves as well as the light at the end of the tree tunnel. Tone also helps define the rhythm and pattern of the leaves and trees. Lastly, line in this piece suggests height and strength which is fitting for the painting. It helps make it feel like you are actually walking in the park because she is able to use this element to bring your vision upwards towards the tops of the trees, just like it would if you were actually there.
This has been displayed at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, so I think that the presentation of it is appropriate for this piece. I also certainly would own this painting; I think it is very beautiful!

A very fitting choice since fall is just around the corner. I definitely agree with you about the uses of darkness and cool tones. It gives he painting an eerie feeling. Though, in my opinion it isn't really a bad eerie feeling but more of an exciting one. It looks like a place if I was a child I'd think it would be very mysterious and fun.
ReplyDeleteWe wouldn't have any trouble imagining this painting while reading your description if a photo weren't provided thanks to how well you described this work of art! It's a great idea to write about this now that fall is here, and I agree with Kainoa on that. My impression is that it doesn't have a spooky vibe and appears to be suitable as a book cover. The trees' color selection gives the impression that they are densely covered in leaves and have a lot of volume, making it seem eerie.

ReplyDeleteThis painting makes me feel like a little kid, in an adult body. Growing up, It was always my goal to throw myself into the biggest pile I leave I could find. While the dark tone of the piece drives the eye to the end of the path, the painting still illuminates the leaves below the canopy, making me imagine that the walk isn't going to be as dark as depicted. I have to agree with your interpretation of strength. The artist put a lot of emotion into this work.
